Fox On The Run EP

Fox On The Run was a short lived hardcore/punk band. They opened for a lot of great bands like Strike Anywhere, New Mexican Disaster Squad, Cold World, A Day And A Deathwish, Rzl Dzl, and many other hardcore and punk bands that came through at the time. They released this 4 song demo before breaking up. I have the cover art, but no scanner..so their logo will have to make due for now. Some of the members later moved on to hardcore bands Frozen Pipes and The Wishlist who are now both distinct.

Million Dollar Marxists - Self-Titled

I don't know much about the history of the band, but I know one thing; they were an awesome band both recorded and live! Every time I saw them live, singer Luke, would be creative and use the whole venue at his discretion. They even played Blues Fest one year, and after Luke climbed to the top of the stage fixtures they threatened to shut them down unless he climbed down immediately. This album is their self-titled I believe. It's a bit before Give It A Name came out. Some of the songs from this are on Give It A Name.

Ever So Clever - Pwned

This band was basically a fail from the get-go upon its inception in 2003. They played nintendocore comparable to Horse The Band, except bad. The recording quality on this is really poor and you can barely tell what's going on, not that you would want to anyway. Basically, the main flaw with this album is it's existence. Download this if you want a seizure, but if you get past the 15 second mark you might find yourself in a coma.

Band Write-ups

We're going to start to have more band/album write-ups done by people who were actually in the band. My write-ups suck and half these bands are from before my time anyway. haha.

Between The Broken - Demo (2006)

Between the Broken will not be a band that you will think of when you recall Ottawa's best bands. However, their shows brought friends together and that's what is most important. In two years BTB played a ton of local shows, one train-wreck of a weekend tour and released one very expensive and poorly produced demo. Let's just leave it at that and say it was fun while it lasted. BTB members are now in other Ottawa bands such as Brights, I Refuse, Benefit of a Doubt and Alaskan.

Full Levity - ...Desperate Times EP (2003)

These guys were awesome. I would describe their music as skate punk but with a harder edge. So melodic hardcore I guess you could say. Most of the lyrics are sung but some are shouted (sort of like how Belvedere did). This EP was recorded at Addictive Studios in Ottawa and released on Space Invader Records.

NoTime - As Is (2002)

NoTime was a band that existed in Ottawa from 1999-2005. This is their second release. The music on this CD is basically early 2000's style Pop Punk reminiscent of bands that you would find on Drive-Thru Records (Home Grown, Midtown, Allister, etc) at the time. I couldn't find the album art.

Body Harvest - Demo (2005)

Body Harvest began in 2003 under a different name. They played hardcore-influenced death metal in the vein of The Black Dahlia Murder and Through The Eyes Of The Dead. They disbanded sometime in 2006.

EDIT: Yeah, I know the stick counts are annoying in this. If you have different versions of these songs without them, please notify me.

Funbox - New Theme (1995)

I don't have much information about this band (such as how and when they formed, significant shows they played, etc) because they are before my time. All I know is that they released two albums in the 90's, both of which kick ass. On the front of this CD it says "Punk For Good Times". I couldn't think of a better way to describe this album.
Released on Crank Records.

Ottawa Obituary

The other day I promoted a show for two pop-punk bands from Montreal and had local's Sack Lunch open. If you don't know who Sack Lunch is, they're a local punk rock band who have been around since I started going to shows, which is quite some time now. They play punk rock anthems reminiscent to those of Face To Face, Youth Brigade and Screeching Weasel. Jon the vocalist/guitarist has not only played in Sack Lunch but many other local heroes such as skate punk band Funbox. Before the show started, myself and my friend Tom, who I book shows with, were reminiscing the past with Jon and drummer, Mark. We we're talking about the 'good old days' and all the great bands that once embraced us. Late, great local bands such as Uninspired Empire, Seven Layers, Bitchin' Camaros and The AKA's were bands braught up in our conversation, followed by a "damn, I wish I had some of these bands recorded material"

After the show I came home with the idea of somehow putting together and creating a directory or archive of Ottawa bands. A place where people could find music by bands they use to love, and people new to the scene could learn about some of the great bands that use to embrace Canada's capital. I messaged my friend Aaron, who's got a good collection of local CD's and he loved the idea. We went on punkottawa and asked peoples opinions and everyone was really excited about the idea!

Now here's how this blog is going to work: The blog is a collaboration of everyone in the scene who wants to share their collection of local music. Anyone who wants to post on the blog can send me the bands album(s), demo(s), or whatever they you have (I guess through soulseek or mediafire?). With the contribution you'd include an album cover or a picture of the band and you'd write a review of the album and/or a little blurb about the band to give an idea what the band was like. Your name (or nickname if that's the case) will be credited at the bottom. Like I said, it will basically be a collaboration between everyone involved in the underground and indie music scene, just with myself and my friend Aaron actually updating the blog (if everyone had the password it would just get confusing!). We can't let past Ottawa bands go forgotten!

You can email myself at sideshow_jeff@hotmail.com if you're interested in making a contribution to the blog!

Thanks!
Jeff
